Top Officials Celebrate the Schuylkill River Trail as Best Urban Trail in America

Copy of banners On September 2nd, federal, state and local officials gathered along the Schuylkill River Trail in Philadelphia to celebrate the trail’s being named USA Today’s Best Urban Trail in America.

Among the speakers were some of the state’s top officials including Cindy Dunn, secretary of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources; John Quigley, secretary of Department of Environmental Protection and Leslie Richards, secretary of the Department of Transportation, who was formerly a Montgomery County commissioner.

Other speakers included Philadelphia Deputy Mayor for Environmental and Community Resources Michael DiBerardinis, Congressman Chaka Fattah, Schuylkill River Heritage Area Executive Director Silas Chamberlin, National Park Service Northeast Regional Director Mike Caldwell, William Penn Foundation Board Chairwoman Janet Haas, and state Rep. David Maloney R, 130th Dist. Maloney spoke in his bike clothes, having ridden to the event along the trail.

The event was highlighted by the unfurling of five banners — one for every county along the trail — announcing the trail as the Best Urban Trail.Read more.
