A half-mile section of the Schuylkill River Trail in Douglassville, Berks County, has re-opened with a freshly repaired the surface following a recent project in early May to remove a log jam from under a bike/pedestrian bridge along the trail. The newly repaired section begins at the Morlatton Bridge Trail head and stretches westward to the west end of the bridge.
The river in that area has re-opened to paddlers, who were encouraged to avoid that section of the river throughout the project as well.
The log jam had created a hazard for paddlers and led to a pileup of debris and trash that, if allowed to continue, could undermine the bridge piers. The bridge is an old railroad bridge that is today part of the Schuylkill River Trail. Contractors began working April 17, using cranes to pull tree trunk and logs out of the water. Volunteers also assisted in the cleanup by removing plastic bottles and other litter that collected in the pileup. See photos of the cleanup here.
