The Appalachian Trail is the queen of hiking trails. From Mt. Katahdin in Maine to Mount Springer in Georgia, it’s a mere 5 million steps away. But the idyllic vistas of North America’s first-class forests of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina should brighten your journey. Potential dangers include brown bear, poisonous snakes, poison ivy and ticks, which spread Lyme disease.

For the first time about the need to equip the trail back in 1920, when a forester named B. McKay put forward a proposal to organize a tourist route through the protected area. And three years later the first section was opened for walking.

Since the length of the Trail is huge, it was decided to involve public organizations and clubs to monitor the cleanliness and order in its individual parts, between which this part of the nature reserve was divided and marked with special rectangles. In addition to steps, handrails and other features to aid climbing and descending, there are more than 265 shelters along the entire length for overnight stays and shelter from rain or snow.

The Appalachian Trail is always crowded with hikers from all over the world. Each year, three to four million visitors come to the Appalachian Trail, and most of them don’t have big goals, just come out for a few days to enjoy the clean mountain air and beautiful scenery.

What you need to know

Like many other attractions, the Trail boasts a set of interesting facts that can be quite helpful during a grueling trip. Let’s take a look at some of them.

So, the travelers who have found strength and overcome the whole route, claim that its conquest takes no less effort than it takes to reach the summit of Mount Everest. So it requires very good physical training, a serious attitude to possible difficulties and a number of skills to survive in the wilderness. Cell phones do not work here, and it is very difficult to call for rescuers. You can only count on themselves and their comrades.

Tourists who are familiar with the peculiarities of the local climate, recommend stocking up on quality sunscreen. Although most of the road is in the shade of numerous trees, a walk in the hot season in the open area can leave searing burns on your skin.

It is highly recommended that you choose a tent that is resistant to both strong gusts of wind and rain, and before taking a nap, make sure that your food is out of reach of the local “thieves” of small bears.

There are also some tips for choosing the right outfit. In particular, the climate allows you to travel in shorts and a T-shirt. But you should not completely abandon the pants because they can be useful in case of a sudden change of weather and they can be put on cold evenings. The shoes should be as comfortable as possible. It is better to give preference to hiking boots with special insoles that will prevent chafing feet. And do not forget about the headgear that will protect your head from the scorching sun.

Tourism

Interestingly, you can meet people of all ages on the Trail. Young people go to the grueling trail to test their strength, and older travelers prefer to spend time here for the benefit of the soul. To be alone with nature, to forget about all problems and troubles, reading a book in the green shade or listening to your favorite music – this is probably the best way to overcome the crisis of middle age.

Another feature of this natural landmark is that the traveler completely gives up the charms of civilized life, lives for one day, and all the problems, other difficulties of life and the noise of the metropolis lose all meaning and remain far behind.

It is said that those travelers who have walked the entire route and returned to the starting point in the same way, notice fundamental changes in the perception of many things, their psyche is transformed, and it is as if additional sources of life energy are opened inside. Interestingly, on the Appalachian Trail, you never see anyone begging. It’s a style of behavior everyone considers undignified.

By the way, if you are considering taking the trail by bicycle, we advise you to abandon this idea. There are many dangerous and difficult sections of the Trail that are impossible to traverse with a bicycle.

The Appalachian Trail in the U.S. will give all wilderness lovers, extreme enthusiasts and ordinary tourists a lot of positive emotions. Once in these places, they will stay in your heart for life.

Zion is a jumble of rocks and stone plateaus riddled with deep canyons and bizarre tunnels. And it’s all painted in different colors: pink, orange, red, emerald, and blue. In this fantastic place, it’s hard to believe that you’re on planet Earth.
The main attraction is Zion Canyon, 24 km long and up to 800 m deep, washed by the northern arm of the Virginia River in Navajo sandstones colored reddish and bronze.

A peculiar feature of the canyon is that, unlike other places on the Colorado Plateau, the layers are not located horizontally, but at a great slope due to the geological stresses and bends that occurred before the plateau rose.
The canyon area is isolated from automobiles, so you can view the Martian landscape by taking one of the many hiking trails.

The summit of Horse Ranch Mountain, at 2,660 meters, is the highest point in Zion Park. The lowest point, 1,120 meters, is on the 1,500-meter ascent of Cole Pitts Wash.

A common phrase states that it’s hard to surprise people with anything these days. People are satiated with information and flashy pictures. But Nature is a great architect, her imagination is inexhaustible, and every time she is able to present something to the observer, from which he freezes in awe. There is no doubt that one of such unrivaled places on Earth is the Zion National Park in the United States.

Zion National Park is located in the southwestern part of the United States, within the state of Utah. Here, in an area of about 600 kmĀ², the Virginia River has dug deep, extraordinarily winding and spectacular gorges for many thousands of years. The river succeeded in this work only because the territory of the state is formed by loose, powerful layers of sandstone that have a rich yellow color. Moreover, these layers are not arranged horizontally, but ramp up at a big angle, sometimes almost vertically. This gives the gorges a special look: it seems from the side as if the river-keeper cut with a monstrous knife a layered cake, having crumpled up its sides beforehand.

The area got its name, Zion, in the mid-19th century, when the Mormon Europeans came to these wild lands. One of them, Isaac Beween, is said to have given the extraordinary terrain its present name (in Hebrew the city of Jerusalem has several names, one of which is Zion). True, a little later, an official geographical expedition gave the area the name Mukuntuvip, and under this name there even arose a national park (in 1909). But the long name didn’t stick with the people, and the old name eventually remained, just as the National Park, one of the oldest in America, remains to this day.

Zion National Park is a fantastic combination of deepest gorges, steep cliffs, and brown, as if ethereal hills. Here, on a relatively small piece of land, mountains and plains, steppes and forests, sand and water meet.

Now, thanks to the efforts of the authorities and the park’s management, there is a well-developed tourist infrastructure here. Buses go from the nearest town, Springdale, to the park all the time. The influx of tourists is so great that in the dry and warm season of the year the movement of personal vehicles on the territory of Zion is forbidden, you need to leave the car at the equipped parking lots and further move in tourist shuttles.

The park has many amazing sand arches, which are among the largest in the world. They were made by water in the sandstone, but there are also man-made arches. A highlight of the park for many years is the longest tunnel built to straighten the way to America’s other two other famous canyons, Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon. These grand geological structures are relatively close to Zion. The tunnel is special not only because it is 1,712 meters long, but also because the builders have intentionally made huge arched windows in its walls, through which you can see far below the narrow bottom of the canyon.

The John Muir Trail runs in California and extends from Yosemite National Park to the summit of Mount Whitney. The hiker will need to hike 330 kilometers, which is almost three weeks to cover the entire route. You have to plan a lot in terms of food, water, and shelter (tents are required) for your hike, and it makes sense if being in the wilderness appeals to you. After all, gorgeous scenery, sparkling streams and silence await you.

John Muir’s trail is one of the most brutal and most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life.

From dawn to dusk it took us 22 days of hiking through some of the most incredible mountain scenery in the United States. Think lush, hidden valleys, crystal clear streams, bright blue thickets and stunning alpine vistas.

Most of the trail is more than 10,000 feet in elevation and includes six mountain passes, one of which tickles 14,000 feet. And if you want to (and we did), you can climb to the top of Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet.

The John Muir trail is not for the faint of heart or from people who suffer from altitude sickness. I took high altitude medicine for three days before taking the trail and five days before climbing Mt. Whitney, and I still lashed out and almost passed out on the descent.

But what I learned on this hike is this: the body adapts, the mindset is crucial, and completing such a massive transition is a life-changing experience. I will never be as fit and in tune with nature as I was at the end of the hike.

Will I do it again? Maybe. Would I recommend others do it? Definitely.

Does that sound like something you want to do? That’s how you can handle the trail.

Getting a permit is difficult because of the sheer number of people wanting one!

Getting a permit to hike the John Muir Trail is one of the hardest parts of this hike. People from all over the world fly to California to tackle this winding mountain trail away from civilization.

That means this: you’re competing with thousands to get a permit.

The most popular route to hike the John Muir Trail is from Yosemite Valley and passes through Mount Whitney Portal.

To handle the influx of demand, Yosemite only allows 45 hikers a day to leave the park on the John Muir Trail. This means that the number of permits is very limited.

Although most people want to start at the bottom of the valley, Yosemite has several other trails where you can start your hike.

When applying, it is recommended that you list more than one option on your permit.

Choices range from Happy Isles to Glacier Point or Sunrise Lakes and more.

Another popular way to get a permit is to change direction completely and hike from south to north.

We tried every day for a month or two to get a permit to go out of Yosemite, but when we failed, we got a permit to go north out of Cottonwood Meadows. This meant we had two full days of hiking before we encountered the John Muir Trail and one additional high mountain pass.

If you don’t want to hike the entire trail, you can enter halfway or three-quarters of the way from one of the many trails that connect to the John Muir Trail.

This trail is unique because it exists on an isolated island in the middle of Lake Superior, Michigan. Located in Isle Royale National Park, the Greenstone Ridge Trail stretches 65 kilometers and is certainly very scenic. Before you begin your hike, you must take a ferry from the mainland, which in itself makes this hiking trail interesting. Moreover, hiking the trail gives you the opportunity to see the wildlife of the national park, including wolves, elk, and deer.

Located in the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The Bright Angel Trail stretches for 3 km and can be grueling not only because it is steep, but also because of the high temperatures. Nevertheless, the scenery you see during the hike is breathtaking and all the effort is worth it.

Not surprisingly, one of Arizona’s most famous hikes is in one of America’s most amazing natural wonders. Bright Angel Trail takes you from the edge of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon down into the canyon. You can hike directly to the Colorado River, but it takes more than a day. Several points along the trail offer good spots for day hikes and make it anywhere from a half-mile walk to a strenuous 12-mile hike. The trail is steep and hugs the canyon wall with huge drop-offs on the outer edge. Anyone with a fear of heights may want to think twice before starting up this trail. Conditions vary greatly depending on the season, from icy and snowy in the winter to hot in the summer.

If you want to admire Yosemite Falls, which is the highest waterfall in North America, you have to hike 5 km, this route requires you to climb 800 m. The hike is strenuous and challenging, but the views of the falls and surrounding areas will inspire you.

Yosemite National Park is a true paradise for those who love mountains, waterfalls, lakes, forests, and lots of walking. Really a lot! To see the inside and feel this unrealistically beautiful park, you will have to walk dozens of kilometers.

Yosemite has many hiking trails or trailheads. They make up the body of the park in bizarre patterns and lead to the most secluded corners. I don’t think it would take me more than a few months to put my foot on all the trails. I nicknamed Yosemite “The Majestic Gray-Green Giant” to myself, for it is enormous, beautiful, and astonishing in scope. All in all, it was our first park in the U.S. with Andrewsix, and at every turn I involuntarily burst out “Wow!” and “Wow!”

In this article, I’ll talk about the most popular hiking spots and trails in Yosemite to make it easier for you to navigate when making your travel plan. I will describe both the hiking trails and the points you can drive to and see. So put on your sneakers and go!

Another incredibly long trail that crosses the United States. The lot of true hiking enthusiasts. The nearly 5,000 kilometers from Mexico to Canada is a challenging but extremely fascinating journey along the Rocky Mountains of North America and places of interest such as the Red Desert in Wyoming and Grays Peak in Colorado. Only 150 people attempt the Continental Frontier each year. The youngest of them was only 13 years old.

As we already know, the name comes from the name of the American Continental Divide and the length of this route is approximately 5,000 km. How do you think, how many will be willing to go all the way, from beginning to end? As you know, this route starts in Mexico and ends in Canada. If you’re interested, take a look at the notes of one traveler – Francis Tapon. Not only did he manage to walk the route from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. He did it twice! Francis Tapon

Remember the principle of the game? As the toy rotates, it unwinds the rope to which the two stapled discs are attached and then returns to its original position. “To yo-yo a trail” means that you are making a round trip. You start your journey from one point, get to the end point, and then return by the same route. Now imagine the journey Francis Tapon took! And he asks the perfectly reasonable question, “Why hasn’t anyone done this before?” to which he himself gives the answer: “You would have to walk more than 5,600 miles in seven months to cover this distance. Not exactly an ordinary walk in the park.” And then the author of the article adds: “I couldn’t find anyone who had the stupidity to do it. I’m glad to be that person.”

However, one should clearly distinguish between the Continental Divide and the route in question. “What difference does it make?” – you ask. Meanwhile, that difference is significant. To begin with, a watershed is a naturally created by nature itself border between the basins of two rivers or other bodies of water, in this case, the basins of several oceans (the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic). The trail we are talking about is artificially created and runs near or directly along the watershed. The American Continental Divide

Trail planners or “trail designers” lay out formal trails that do not always coincide with watersheds, mountain ranges, or other natural features for a variety of reasons.
First, it can be an elementary lack of water. For example, at more than 3,100 miles, you may simply not have access to drinking water, which, of course, can end badly. To solve the problem, travelers would have to turn off their intended route several times.
Second, private property rights. If the owner of the land (and often these are huge plots) does not agree with the fact that hundreds of strangers will walk on its territory, nothing can be done, we will have to make a route around it.

Another criterion to determine where the trail will be laid out – the hikers desire for beauty. Just imagine: you have a choice – to stick to a natural watershed, where the landscape can be monotonous for several kilometers, or to deviate slightly and enjoy the amazing waterfalls and exotic trees, which would you prefer? Finally, another important factor is the safety of travelers, because by following such a “natural route” you will have to pass through mountain ranges where there can be very steep descents, which is extremely life-threatening. According to Francis Tapon, “travelers are lazy creatures. We don’t take our equipment with us to conquer mountain peaks. And none of us wants to die as a result of an accidental fall. “Francis Tapon

Of course, to list the benefits of such a journey can be very long. If you are going to conquer the Continental Frontier with travelers from other countries, without a doubt, before you open almost unlimited opportunities in learning a foreign language. Moreover, it will be not just academic, “dry” English, the level of which can be improved by enrolling in courses. Quite the contrary – in such a trip you will improve the spoken, living language, and also learn to perceive speech of native speakers by ear. It may not be easy at first. But every day you will notice how it becomes easier and more pleasant to find a common language.
